However, now it is not limited to only printed word as in newspapers or magazines. Slander, which is defined as defamation of character by spoken word is now portrayed as a form of libel because of the abundance and power the broadcast spoken word can have as in radio and television. However, libel has a much stronger penalty than that of slander because print is seen to have a much more long lasting effect, and once something is on paper yo u cant take it back. On the other hand, with tape recordings and the fact that any spoken defamation can de saved and distributed, radio and TV most times fall in the libel category. Invasion of privacy in fact does have strong ties with that of libel. Though it does hurt a person or organizations character, it deals more with how the information is obtained. Simply stated privacy laws deal with a persons right to be left alone. There are more specifically four types of violation of someones privacy. The first one is called intrusion, which is the actual physical violation of someones privacy, as in trespassing to obtain information. The second is appropriation, which is commercial exploitation of a persons image or likeness with out consent. Thirdly is false light, portrays someone in false light or gives false pretences. Lastly is information on private facts, that are actually true but private, and that will severely embarrass or hurt someones reputation. Through these definitions and specifics on each, it is easy to see how both intertwine and are closely related. Now what we know what each is it is time to examine which of the two is a more serious concern. Personally, in understanding the two, I would have to say that libel is a more serious issue with broadcast media. To be more specific, the worst possible thing a journalist or media outlet can do is to ruin the character of a private person. That is to say it is a much more serious offense to publish false information about some one who is not in the public eye. Subsequently, it is much harder for a public figure to prove libel because he or she must prove actual malice, that the medium actually intended to hurt the person with these words. More over, I feel that libel is worse because it is the actual publishing or broadcasting of the information that can hurt a person and once it is published you cant take it back. However because of this, the idea of false light, private fact s and libel are very closely connected here. Its easy to see and understand the ideas of intrusion and appropriation. In fact many media slightly encourage their reporter to dig up dirt by either trespassing or sneaking around to get information, and as well to use a persons picture with out consent. However the two more serious of the privacy laws are very much like that of libel. To fully understand we much focus on these three aspects of the issue. Above all, it is the medias job to publish what is true. It is its job to give the audience news and that of truthful news. The most serious concern with the media is that what they reveal to the audience must be true because as a society we are greatly influenced by what we read, hear, and see through the press. This is why libel is more serious than privacy issues. Publishing false or inaccurate information directly is the biggest, and most devastating thing a journalist or media can do. That is the underlining factor of the two. Pub lishing private and true embarrassing facts may hurt someone severely, but journalists feel that it is a right for a person in the audience to know the truth. The Birlings seem to be a good, honest family but as we learn throughout they are far from that. This creates tension as the audience wonder what other actions the Birlings could have done to contribute towards Eva Smiths suicide. For example, during the stage directions at the start of act one we get a sign that things are not as they should be when it mentions that the lighting should be pink and intimate until the inspector arrives, and then it should be brighter and harder. This suggests that to start with the lighting expresses the situation that everything is all right and intimate, but when the inspector arrives the lighting becomes harder symbolising the actions the Birlings have done to contribute towards Eva Smiths death. From the moment the Inspector arrives he takes control of the characters. His answers are short and he makes no attempt to develop a conversation that does not involve the inquiry he is conducting. Additionally, he never conducts two lines of inquiry simultaneously, breaking down each member of the Birling household individually because one person and one line of inquiry at a time. Otherwise theres a muddle. This is shown when he presents the photograph to each of the family members in turn. For example, when he shows the photograph of the girl to Mr. Birling, Eric and Gerald both try to get a glimpse of the photgraph but the Inspector interposes himself between the two, continuing his desire for one line of inquiry at a time. Emily Dickinson's Fascicle 17 Approaching Emily Dickinson’s poetry as one large body of work can be an intimidating and overwhelming task. There are obvious themes and images that recur throughout, but with such variation that seeking out any sense of intention or order can feel impossible. When the poems are viewed in the groupings Dickinson gave many of them, however, possible structures are easier to find. In Fascicle 17, for instance, Dickinson embarks upon a journey toward confidence in her own little world. She begins the fascicle writing about her fear of the natural universe, but invokes the unknowable and religious as a means of overcoming that fear throughout her life and ends with a contextualization of herself within both nature and eternity. The first poem in the fascicle, â€Å"I dreaded that first Robin so†, shows us a Dickinson who is intimidated by even the most harmless creatures in the world around her. Despite the title she gives herself, â€Å"The Queen of Calvary†, her fears seem to hinge on a feeling of inferiority to these small harbingers of spring (24). The first chirp of the robin holds some awful power, while the daffodils become fashionable critics of Dickinson’s simplicity. These comparisons set Dickinson up as someone very small and â€Å"childish†Ã¢â‚¬â€she cannot even stand up to birds and flowers without fear of being exposed to them and found lacking (26). The next poem, â€Å"I would not paint—a picture—† continues this idea, but with a slightly more pleasant spin. While somewhat paradoxically rejecting the idea of making art herself (even devoting a stanza to why she should not write poetry), she gives a sense of the exhilaration she find s in being the audience for any kind of art. As the second poem gave us the unsettling idea that the author of the poem we were reading was afraid to compose poetry, this poem shows us her coming to terms with that. She has come to her â€Å"Heaven† through poetry—â€Å"unexpected†, but eventually with confidence brought about by the trials dealt with throughout the fascicle. The artist is able to convey their feelings through song, getting their listener engaged and sensing the same emotion. In today’s world, there are less and less songs that people can connect with. Songs try to be more catchy and promote good times that people should be feeling, instead of the sensations that they actually feel. One such man that has yet to succumb to this is Five for Fighting’s John Ondrasik. He has written several songs about love, life, and human imperfections. One of his most famous songs that brought him into the spotlight was his single â€Å"Superman (It’s Not Easy)†. This song is one of the greatest songs of the decade†¦show more content†¦The camera then moves over one window to where Ondrasik is standing alone. He begins to sing, and from there his piano appears and the rest of his band appears. One of the video elements that the director used to move from scene to scene is hav ing the setting fade in and out as the camera changes angles. The music video continues, but at the end Ondrasik is singing alone in the woods. As the camera moves above him looking down, the woman and baby are revealed laying on a mattress by his feet. He lays down with them on the mattress in the woods as the song ends. This opening and closing gives a bit more of Ondrasik’s exact point in life. By looking at the poems studied so far, and the repetition of certain themes this can be seen. A lot of Hardy’s poetry is drenched in nostalgia. Of the poems studied so far, many of them reflect on a past incident. Past experiences are remembered in poems like; The Waterfall, We Sat At The Window and Castle Boterel. In the poems written between 1912 and 1913, these memories are especially painful because they were written in wake of his wife’s death. The poems are almost acts of catharsis as he comes to terms with the loss and reflects on death. He looks back on seemingly insignificant moments which acquire poignancy because of what has preceded them. This is seen in At Castle Boterel when Hardy remarks, â€Å"It filled but a minute. But was there ever A time of such quality† Loss is an important subject in the poems studied. Loss is not only discussed in the poems between 1912 and 1913 but also in the poem written after his mother’s death. However, the difference is the nature of this loss. In After The Last Breath hardy tries to reconcile the conflicting emotions of relief and loss which he feels. His mother’s death was the drawn out process of old age which caused everyone around her to be in a permanent state of anxiety. When she dies he feels a â€Å"numb relief† which â€Å"savours well†. The pain he feels is small in comparison to his joy that she has escaped the â€Å"cell† of â€Å"time†. His reaction to Emma’s death is different because hers was much more sudden. Hardy feels haunted by her memory and sees her at the â€Å"end of the alley†; this idea is developed in The Voice. In The Voice he hears the voice of his dead wife â€Å"call to [him]†. In the first line he repeats â€Å"call to me† in an onomatopoeic manner which mimics the calling he hears. The repetition of â€Å"call† also picks up the word â€Å"all† in the third line and emphasises how much she really meant to him. In The Walk Hardy juxtaposes the past with the present; this is also done in Beeny Cliff and At Castle Boterel. In The Walk he shows how much has really changed despite the fact that, physically, it appears the same. In the first stanza Hardy is walking up to â€Å"the hill top tree† but is walking â€Å"alone† because his wife was â€Å"weak and lame†. However he does not mind because he doesn’t think of her as being â€Å"left behind†. The second stanza shifts to the present; he is walking up the hill in the â€Å"former way†. When he returns to the hill and, on the surface, everything appears the same, he asks, â€Å"What difference then?† Even though it appears the same there is, â€Å".that underlying sense Of the look of a room on returning thence† This last rhyming couplet sharply contrasts with the last rhyming couplet of the first stanza in which Hardy does â€Å"not mind† going â€Å"alone†. Despite the fact that she was never there with him, the effect of her death has permeated his perception. In Beeny Cliff Hardy looks bac k on a past event but this is one in which his wife was present. It is presented with far more nostalgia than in The Walk as he looks back on the â€Å"clear-sunned March Day†. The first three stanzas are full of colour and â€Å"light-hearted† joy, even though there is darkness it is only temporary and the, â€Å".sun [bursts] out again† After the first three stanzas Hardy shifts again; the joy of the previous stanzas are juxtaposed against the final two which serves to highlight the contrast. Like James Joyce in the Dubliners, Hardy is presenting the effect of the dead upon the living. This subject is in no line more poignantly illustrated than in The Going; when he finds out about his wife’s death, he sees, â€Å"morning harden upon the wall† Throughout his poetry he underlines the deep emotional connections that certain places have. This is explored in At Castle Boterel and Beeny Cliff, but in particular in Wessex Heights. In the town he is hau nted by the â€Å"phantoms† and â€Å"ghosts† of the past. He is also haunted by his former self; Hardy used the word â€Å"chrysalis† in reference to the town, showing it as a place of change. He is able to find solace in the Heights because it is a place, â€Å"Where men have never cared to haunt, nor women have walked with me, And ghosts then keep their distance; and I know some liberty.† Nature offers him a chance for escapism; both from the memories of other people and himself. This echoes the line from Tess of the D’Urbervilles, in which he says Tess’s shame is, â€Å"Based on nothing more tangible than a sense of condemnation under an arbitrary law of society which had no foundation in Nature.† A major theme in Hardy’s poetry is the merciless movement of time. This theme really comes to its head in the 1912-13 poems, written after the death of Emma. Despite the death of his wife the world continues and he is reminded of his own mortality. In Beeny Cliff the waves are, â€Å"engrossed in saying their ceaseless babbling say† The waves move forward mechanically like time. Though the waves might have seemed â€Å"far away† when they were together, time has caught up with them. Time has now taken Emma to a place where she, â€Å"no longer cares for Beeny and will laugh there nevermore† This is also seen in At Castle Boterel. Whilst Hardy is alive his memories are projected upon the landscape and the rocks â€Å"record† their moments there together. These memories are a â€Å"phantom figure† which is â€Å"fading† as Hardy’s â€Å"sand is sinking†. When Hardy dies no trace of them ever being there will remain because none will remember it, time, in its â€Å"unflinching rigour†, will have moved on. The rocks are â€Å"primeval† and have witnessed the â€Å"Earth’s long order† and will continue to do so once he is gone. Ha rdy is a being humbled by the idea of time. In The Waterfall he is mesmerised by the, â€Å"The purl of a runlet that never ceases In stir of kingdoms, in wars, in peaces;† In the face of the longevity of nature, his life is merely fleeting. Nature is a key subject in both Hardy’s poems and his books. Like the lone tree in the The Walk, the natural surroundings reflect and magnify the emotions experienced. Hardy uses pathetic fallacy to illustrate the deep emotional connection he feels with nature. In Beeny Cliff the sea is â€Å"opal† and â€Å"sapphire† when Emma is alive. After Emma has died the cliff is â€Å"chasmal†, it reflects the divide between them which can’t be crossed. In The Waterfall the landscape also reflects a time of love and, â€Å"add to the rhyme of love† In direct contrast to The Waterfall, Neutral Tones shows a couple’s apathy towards each other mirrored by the colourless landscape. The poem is set in wi nter which is symbolically linked to death and decay. The â€Å"few leaves† which lie on the ground are symbolic of a previous fertility and life which is now lost and this representative of their relationship. Like the area around them her smile is â€Å"the deadest thing†. In Beeny Cliff the seasons are also utilised; it is a â€Å"clear-sunned March day† which traditionally represents a time of fertility and joy. Later on in the poem March is used ironically; he returns to Beeny Cliff on a March day but there is no longer any joy. In We Sat At The Window July the seasons are used ironically again. Even though they are two people in their â€Å"prime† they are â€Å"wasted†: even though it is July it is raining. The scene is incongruous and they are â€Å"irked by it†. This contrasts sharply with The Waterfall in which a moment of pure happiness takes place in the â€Å"burn of August†. Nature is shown as something both malign and b enign. In The Walk it offers no solace to Hardy; the tree on the top of the hill becomes symbolic of his own state and Hardy helps present this by rhyming â€Å"tree† with â€Å"me†. Hardy does not overcomplicate the event, the lexis is quite simple and his sense of loneliness is understated; this is a method used in many of his poems. There is a frequent juxtaposition of the simplicity of the lexis and the emotional weight of the situation. In I Found Her Out There Hardy finds solace in the notion of Emma being part of nature after her death. He finds her on a slope that â€Å"falls westwardly†; west is associated with dying because it is where the sun sets. He takes her away from the â€Å"sharp-edged air† where the â€Å"ocean breaks† and instead lays her to rest in the softly alliterated â€Å"noiseless nest† where she won’t be â€Å"haunted†. One of the underlying subjects in Hardy’s poetry is his agnosticism. In Ha p he believes his life is dictated by â€Å"casualty† and not by the will of god. Hardy asks for a â€Å"vengeful† god; his view of the world is such that, if it were to be the product of any higher power, it is a ruthless one. He believes that random chance, or â€Å"hap†, dictates his suffering. He explicitly links â€Å"pilgrimage† with â€Å"pain† through alliteration; he is referencing the sacrificial element of religion. Throughout the rest of the poems it is the lack of religion which remarkable. In the poems written after the death of his wife few religious references are made, this is quite unusual and Hardy’s views are quite pagan. When he describes laying his wife to rest in I Found Her Out There he uses many natural images like â€Å"loamy† and â€Å"nest†, this burial appears quite heathen. In Beeny Cliff Hardy is unsure where his wife is; the previously regular rhythm jars at â€Å"-elsewhere-â€Å"to illustrate Hardy’s uncertainty in regards to the afterlife. In the poems studied so far the range of Hardy’s subject matter is relatively small. Throughout the poems subjects such as; loss, nature and the past are interwoven. These subjects are presented quite clearly and, by looking at the group of poems as a whole, we get a view of Hardy’s own personal beliefs. Often the methods he uses to present a subject are repeated throughout all his poems. However, what he may lack in range he makes up for in depth. For example, in the 1912-13 poems, the reader gets a clear idea about Hardy’s feelings towards death. A small range in subject matter of these poems is to be expected given the circumstances under which they were written. This depth of understanding would, most likely, not have been achieved in one poem. By this frequent repetition of certain subjects we can see how important they are to Hardy. Hemingway Protagonist - Soldier's Home Various authors, through years of discipline, develop their own style in creating characters. Ernest Hemingway varied his style by establishing an indestructible template for pressing characters into molded protagonists. This "template" protagonist follows a unique set of standards unlike any other character, produced by any other author. In his literary work "Soldier's Home", Hemingway creates the character Krebs to abide by this set of standards. By working within the circumstances presented to him, Krebs fits the mold of a typical Hemingway protagonist by overcoming his disillusions through heroic actions. To begin with, Krebs returns home from World War I to a society that he no longer feels attached to. It can be assumed that before the war Krebs worked within society since he is depicted in a college photo along with his similarly-dressed fraternity brothers. When he enlists into the Marines though, life becomes simplistic; you eat, sleep, and fight. The problem arises when Krebs tries to return from a simplistic lifestyle of war, to a much more complicated domestic lifestyle. "Ironically, Krebs is disillusioned less by the war than by the normal peacetime world which the war had made him to see too clearly to accept" (Burhans 190). Krebs seeks refuge from this disillusion by withdrawing from society and engaging himself in individual activities. A typical day for Krebs consists of going to the library for a book, which he would read until bored, practicing his clarinet, and shooting pool in the middle of the day; this is common for a Hemingway protagonist. Hemingway realizes "that with the disappearance of the transcendent and the absolute from man's consciousness, the universe becomes empty of meaning and purpose..." (Burhans 284); a good basis for testing a protagonist to see whether or not he's heroic . A more specific way that Krebs withdraws from society is his view of women and love. In a society full of talk, Krebs would have to engage in conversation and interaction in order to win a woman's heart. Krebs did not want to go through all of that again. He found it much easier during the war to become intimate with a French or German girl, especially considering that there wasn't as much "red tape" in European relationships. It was just too complicated to adjust himself back to an American relationship which he deemed full of consequences. In other works by Hemingway, protagonists are "haunted by a sense of how simple it all was once, when he could take his Indian girl into the clean-smelling woods, stretch out beside her on the pine-needles (her brother standing guard), and rise to no obligations at all" (Fiedler 143). Krebs is much the same way. He experienced this obligation-free relationship in Europe and was disgusted by the thought of returning to an obligated relationship in America. Hemingway himself learned of obligations from four separate marriages; why should any of his fictional characters escape this dreaded wrath. Another way that Krebs withdraws from society is the loss of his faith. Before the war Krebs attended a Methodist college, which reinforces the idea that he was a man of faith. During the war though, Krebs experiences a change in his beliefs. It can only be imagined what unholy things he had seen and done in the midst of battle. Once home, he denounces existing in God's Kingdom to his mother and refuses to pray. Hemingway felt that it is this "determination to be faithful to one's own experience, not to fake emotions or pretend to sentiments that are not there" is brought out in Krebs' character (Howe 233). It is this tone, the importance of one's inner beliefs over anyone else's, which pushes Hemingway's protagonist away from society. So how does one become heroic after denouncing so much of society? If alive today, Hemingway's answer may very well be "grace under pressure." Customary in Hemingway's literary works, such as Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea, the protagonist is always fighting a losing battle. Philip Young, a well-known critic of Hemingway, says it best when he states that in life "you lose, of course; what counts is how you conduct yourself while you are being destroyed" (Young 274). A Hemingway hero would take notice of his ill fate and make the best of it. The motive behind Hemingway's heroic figures is not glory, or fortune, or the righting of injustice, or the thirst for experience. They are inspired neither by vanity nor ambition nor a desire to better the world. They have no thoughts of reaching
